Dionysis Grammenos conducts the GYSO at Carnegie Hall

On Sunday 3 November, Greek conductor Dionysis Grammenos will lead the Greek Youth Symphony Orchestra in a concert of Skalkottas and Bernstein at Carnegie Hall. Following his successful debut with Houston Symphony in July, Grammenos is back in the US for this special concert in which the GYSO will be the first national youth orchestra from Europe to appear at the Stern Auditorium in Carnegie Hall.

On the upcoming performance, Grammenos said:

‘We could not be more excited that Greek Youth Symphony Orchestra will make its American debut at Carnegie Hall this fall. Just about 70 years ago to the date of our concert, the great Greek conductor, Dimitri Mitropoulos, led the New York Philharmonic in the debut of Nikos Skalkottas’ “Greek Dances” on the stage of Carnegie Hall. Our performance of this work feels like a celebration of the legacy of Greek music and artistry to have played this fabled stage.’

Grammenos founded the GYSO in 2017 and works tirelessly to raise funds and create exciting opportunities for all players involved, which next year will include their debut appearance at London’s St Martin-in-the-Fields.
